The Madras High Court has sought an explanation from the city police chief on the February 19 police-lawyers clash and said it could initiate contempt proceeding on the matter.

The government and the Swat chapter of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have agreed to a “permanent” ceasefire in the militancy-hit valley after Maulana Fazlullah accepted the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation, letting the government to announce the reopening of schools and the return of persons displaced during the conflict.

Curfew has been relaxed in twin capital districts of Manipur for five hours today. An indefinite curfew was imposed on Thursday following violence by the locals protesting against the murder of three state government employees in Ukhrul district by some unknown miscreants.

The right to education will soon become law as a Bill in this regard has already been tabled in Parliament, Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh has said. “A Bill in this regard has been tabled in Parliament, which will soon take the shape of law,” he said yesterday while declaring Dr Hari Singh Gour Vishwa Vidyalaya here as a Central university.
