US senate imposes strict conditions on H-1B hiring
Washington, February 7
In what could be seen as a setback to Indian IT professionals, the US senate has voted for imposing strict conditions on hiring of people with H-1B visas by American companies receiving federal bailout money.

Khan serious proliferation risk: US
President Barack Obama wants assurances from Pakistan that rogue nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan is not involved in the nuclear proliferation activity that prompted his house arrest in 2004. The Islamabad High Court on Friday declared Dr Khan a free man. US officials said they did not have confirmation of the court's ruling from the government of Pakistan but reacted sharply in response to reports of Khan’s freedom.

BSP leader killed in Churu
Jaipur, February 7
One person was killed and six others were injured today in clashes between police and unruly mob protesting the murder of BSP leader Virendra Nangli, who was gunned down by two motorcycle- borne youths in Churu on Friday. The police fulfilled the main demand of the protesters by booking a sitting MP, Ram Singh Kasava, belonging to the BJP for murder.

Youth opens fire at CST
Mumbai, February 7
The railway police arrested a youth, Rajesh Tomar, this morning after he opened fire inside the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station. The police said Tomar who was roaming inside the railway station panicked when he was called to open his bag for checking. Tomar (19), however, pulled out a countrymade gun from his bag and fired a round before attempting to flee.

Vajpayee serious but stable
New Delhi, February 7
Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee continues to be on assisted breathing devices in the intensive care unit of AIIMS. His condition, said the doctors, was serious but stable, and he would have to be kept under intensive medical surveillance for at least 10 days.

CRPF may replace Army
Srinagar, February 7
The government is contemplating to partly replace Army units deployed for counter-insurgency operations with the CRPF. Official sources told The Tribune that the exercise, long supported by the state administration, has received a fillip due to a continual fall in militancy and the CRPF has formed a committee to coordinate with the Army and to find out areas where they could initially come in place of the Army.

The migrant story has just lost an edge. Ask Kishanjit Singh, a 78-year-old farmer from Lalton village, near here: it is after 10 years that he has been forced to watering his fields this year. In good times, Pappu was always at hand to help him. But, this year, Pappu returned home to his village in Ballia district of Bihar and has not come back.
