Without naming Pakistan, President Pratibha Patil today rejected the contention that “independent actors” were behind the attacks on Mumbai and other places and observed India was located in a region that “harbours the epicentre of terrorism.”

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is recovering “exceptionally” well after his 11-hour heart bypass surgery at AIIMS yesterday and is eager to get back to work. The night after the surgery passed off uneventfully, and the PM was put off the ventilator at 1 am today.

As many as six security personnel, who laid down their lives fighting terrorists during the Mumbai attack, will be awarded the Ashok Chakra — the highest award for gallantry during peacetime — on Republic Day.

Extradition possible if ties better: Gilani
Islamabad, January 25
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has indicated that Pakistan may consider the option of extraditing terror suspects to India in the wake of the Mumbai attacks if the bilateral ties are "normalised". "We are taking extremely seriously the dossier passed on to the government of Pakistan (by the Indian government).

2 suspected Pak terrorists killed in Noida
Lucknow, January 25
Thwarting possible trouble in the national capital on the occasion of the Republic Day, a joint team of the UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the Noida police shot down two suspected Pakistani terrorists in Noida today morning. Two AK-47s, five hand grenades, 1 kg RDX, 120 live cartridges, Rs 18,000 in cash, detonators and a rucksack have been recovered from a white Maruti 800 car in which they were trying to sneak in.

Girl’s family kills couple for honour
Amritsar, January 25
In a case of honour killing, a newly married couple was shot dead by the family of the 19-year-old girl near Gurdwara Bir Baba Budha Sahib in Thatha village falling under Tarn Taran police district during daytime today. Balkar Singh (30) and Ravinder Pal Kaur had recently got married in a court on January 1.

IPS officer held for smuggling heroin
Mumbai/Chandigarh, January 25
The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the Mumbai police arrested a senior IPS officer with 12 kg heroin today. Interestingly, the officer, identified as Shaji Mohan, was recently transferred to Mumbai from Chandigarh where he held a plum post in the Narcotics Control Bureau. According to ATS chief KP Raghuvanshi, the value of heroin recovered from the accused is pegged at Rs 12 crore in the international market.
