Kirpal Singh with his Geraldine Rolling history

If you thought that history is only to be found in heavy textbooks or preserved in the safe confines of any museum, then think again. For, we have some city collectors who are contributing their bits by preserving history in a unique way.

Car Czar
For Balbir Singh, putting back a vintage car into its former glory is the biggest achievement
Old songs are melodious and old wine tastes better always. Age might be a prominent depreciating factor in general but for some, it guarantees an unmistakable rustic charm. It also goes for our old beauties on the roads - vintage and classic cars. But ever wondered what keeps them going and what makes them win praise from everybody when they are out of garages for rallies? At least in our city, we can say, it is the efforts of Balbir Singh, an auto electrician by profession, who adds longitivity to these heritage pieces.

Cate turns teacher
Cate Blanchett Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett may turn her rusty shack to help train budding actors. The Elizabeth star was said to have kept the ownership of the old woolshed in central western New South Wales a hush-hush matter until now. According to a source, Blanchett has been silently letting students from three Sydney universities to camp at the old station known as Riverslea. Sydney rchitect Dylan Gower, allegedly managing the property for the actor, had been unwilling to say much on the activities that took place in the woolshed. He said: “It’s still in the development stage, there are a few projects going on and we’re trying to take it to the next level. “Some of the projects are in relation to architecture and design but we want to take it beyond that. We don’t want any publicity until it gets to the right level.’’ However, Sydney Aboriginal designer added: “I believe eventually they want to make it into an educational training facility, perhaps for acting workshops.” —ANI Cate Blanchett

Revolutionary revelation
Leonardo DiCaprio Leonardo DiCaprio has revealed that he could feel tension in the air as he prepared to perform sex scenes with Kate Winslet in the new movie Revolutionary Road, with her husband Sam Mendes directing. Mendes was looking on intently as the Titanic stars got ready for the cameras. And DiCaprio asaid that doing an intimate scene with his co-star in front of her husband made things a bit uncomfortable. “Kate seemed very nervous. She kept on saying, ‘This feels so weird.’ I just told her, ‘It doesn’t feel weird to me — it’s only acting,’” DiCaprio was quoted as saying. “Then Sam broke the tension by telling me how and where to hold Kate’s bottom. He said, ‘Put your hand here,’ showing me the position. “After that, Kate just went for it, like the great actor she is. I can’t think of anyone in the world of her generation who is better,” he added. —ANI

Lily Allen Lily Allen has reportedly parted ways with her 100-million-pound beau, who is twenty-two years her senior, less than a month after the two allegedly got together. The 23-year-old singer was said to have been “smitten” with the 45-year-old art dealer Jay Jopling, and had been spotted kissing and cuddling while holidaying in St Barts in the Caribbean. But sources have now revealed that the Smile star has opted for splitsville owing to their age difference, and her professional commitments as she prepares to tour UK and Europe.“It was her decision to split as she’ll be away a lot this year and wouldn’t have got to see Jay much,” a close friend was quoted as saying.“ She also felt the age gap was a bit too big. Talking cricket
This Bengali girl from Mohali may not know how to swing a bat, but she sure knows how to add spice to the game
Who says you need to know cricket like the back of your hand to talk about it, or even host a show on it. Take it from Archana Vijaya, an anchor on Neo Sports for shows Extra Cover Tour Diary and Cricket Tarka Maar Key, who used to go blank when it came to cricket. In fact, she was completely blank about everything that happened to her in the recent times. "I never thought I would take part in Channel V's Get Gorgeous contest and then go ahead to win the title. Never thought I would wear heels and strut down the ramp, and well, I have done that too on national and international stage," says Archana, who anchored the recently held England tour of India.

Spade work
Citrus tale
The city is blessed with a climate that permits the growing of a large variety of fruit trees, ranging from the temperate to the tropical types. In the large premises it is not a problem to have different types, but when it comes to small dwellings there has to be a choice and lemon tops the list as a must-have tree when such a situation arises.

Verses of Lohri
Celebrating the festival of Lohri can be fun when it is done with freshly written poems and stories. So, it was in the city on Monday evening with poetry recitations by Pal Kaur, Jaswant Deed, Taran Gujaral and Surjit Kaur Bains at a Literary Lohri organised by the Sunday Indian, Punjabi. The occasion also included the release of Pal Kaur's new book of verse called Paun Taragi and litterateur Rana Nayar perfomed the release ceremony. Taran Gujaral's book of short stories Rimjhim Barse Meghla was released by Punjabi writer Gulzar Sandhu. Veteran Punjabi writer Mohan Bhandari released the special Punjabi literature issue of The Sunday Indian, Punjabi, which carried paintings of local artist Malkit Singh.
Jaswant Deed read a piece from his book of prose Dharati Hore Pare and Gurbachan gave a critical appraisal. It was followed by lighting of a bonfire and spirited recitation of Sundar Mundriye Ho. - TNS

Fun-tastic spirit
When it’s the festival time, nothing beats the hustle-bustle and upbeat spirit of Panjab University. The excitement and entertainment supply is so constant that it gives you the estimate of why Punjabis are known to be fun-tastic. So, the reason for fun this time was Lohri and the campus was fully fuelled up with music, bonfire and the echos of dulha bhatti song, of course sans the rhythm.
