Jalandhar, December 27
In a major accident, four persons were killed when the car (PB 08 V 8414) in which they were travelling was hit by a train at an unmanned crossing at Upplan village, near Nurmahal, late last night.

This unmanned crossing has been the cause of several deadly accidents in the past five years, but the government and the Railways have yet to take steps to stop such incidents.

According to sources, poor visibility due to the foggy weather and the failure of the deceased to check for the approaching train are said to be the cause for the accident that occurred at about 11 pm. The deceased, residents of Samrala Chowk, Ludhiana, have been identified as Manjinder Singh (35), his wife Paramjit Kaur (33) and their daughter Ishika (8). The lone survivor was the couple’s son, 10-year-old Rohan Singh who has been admitted to a hospital in Ludhiana where his condition is stated to be stable.

Another occupant who died was the family’s friend, Kulbir Singh. Manjider was on the way to his in-laws’ place when the incident occurred.
