Gurdaspur, December 21 This was disclosed by Punjab health minister Luxmi Kanta Chawla, who was here today to formally inaugurate the pulse polio programme in the state. She was accompanied by the senior officials of state health department, including Gurdaspur chief medical officer R.S. Rana. Chawla said process of recruiting as many as 250 doctors would be completed by the end of this month and all these doctors would be given the appointment letter to join at their respective places of posting. Immediately after the exercise was over, the process of recruiting 150 more doctors would begin immediately. She said under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), as many as 101 health centres would be equipped with all kinds of facilities to provide medicare to people round the clock. The ladies and children specialists would also be posted at these centres. The doctors would get salaries ranging from Rs 25,000 to 35,000. After administering polio drops to children in the local civil hospital, she said under the programme, as many as 38 lakh children of the age ranging 0 to five years would be administered polio drops. The health minister added the programme would continue for two more days. She said 70,000 workers of the health department had been manning 16,000 polio booths across
the state. She said in Gurdaspur district alone, about 3.2 lakh children would be administered polio drops.

Lok Sabha polls: EC seeks security details
Amritsar, December 21 The Election Commission , in a communication to all the district headquarters in the state, has asked the administration to give complete information about the proposed security set up for holding free and fair elections. The police has already started preparing a security blueprint and has been taking all inputs on sensitive issues which would be proposed
to be put in place during the general polls slated to be held in April-May next year after
the completion of the present tenure of the Lok Sabha. Earlier, Amritsar district had two parliamentary constituencies but after the creation of the new district of Tarn Taran, which was earlier part of the Amritsar district and under delimitation of the parliamentary constituencies Khadoor Sahib, has been declared a reserved constituency. |

Tarn Taran, December 21 This was stated by state president of the party Avtar Singh Karimpuri, recently elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, while addressing a party rally organised
here today. Karimpuri called the party workers to be ready to spread the message of the party supremo to each voter of the state as the party would like to see Mayawati as the next PM in the forthcoming elections of the
Lok Sabha. The state president of the party said the ruling SAD-BJP and Congress, both did not have a mass base as strong as that of the BSP. The BSP would be an equal political opponent for them in the next elections
in the state. It was Karimpuri’s first visit to the town after being sworn as Rajya Sabha member. He was also honoured by the party workers on the occasion. |

Jalandhar, December 21 The presidents of Youth Congress (rural) from Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala also expressed their support in favour of Ravneet Singh Bittu. Addressing a press conference here, Vikramjit said the presidents of both DYC (rural) and (urban) have already expressed their assurance to support Bittu in the upcoming PYC elections. Bittu, on the other hand, commended the effort of the All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi in conducting transparent elections with transparency and bringing youth from grass roots level to the fore. Bittu asserted that raising a voice against social issues like drug addiction, female foeticide and better education facilities in villages would be their top priority besides ensuring the victory of the Congress candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. |

One killed as roof of house caves in
Jalandhar, December 21 The mishap occurred when labourers were engaged in the construction work of a slab of the house and the supports of the shuttering gave way leading to the roof collapse. Sandeep Saidana, son of the house owner, Satpal Saidana, and contractor Gian Singh got buried under the debris. According to eyewitnesses, Sandeep and Gian Singh were inspecting the supports of the shuttering, underneath the slab, while over 25 workers were atop. The loose supports could not bear the weight of the construction material and the roof caved in leaving the two under it. A hue and cry was raised and the police was informed. The news spread like a wildfire in the area. Scores of residents and other passersby assembled at the spot and swung into the rescue operation. Receiving information, a police party from Basti Bawa Khel police post reached the spot and called the local fire brigade authorities for help. Two cranes were pressed into service. Public joined hands with the firemen and could extricate the body of Sandeep after one and a half hours of struggle. Gian Singh was lucky and was rescued from under the debris after 20 minutes. Sandeep Saidana was rushed to the local civil hospital where the doctors declared him ‘brought dead’. Gian Singh was hospitalised with multiple injuries. A resident of Raseel Nagar, Satpal Saidana, was constructing the house in Nahla village for his son Sandeep Saidana, a courier company’s employee. ASI Sarabjit Singh, in charge of Basti Bawa Khel police post, said the body was sent for postmortem. The police has started investigations after registering a complaint. |
More cases solved in lok adalats
Jalandhar, December 21 Under “Samadhan-2008,” around 50,000 cases were disposed off and a total amount of Rs 51,56,29, 164 was awarded as settlement money in Jalandhar district, claimed Gurdev Singh, district and sessions judge-cum-chairman of the district legal service authority. Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Tirath Singh Thakur inspected the proceedings of the mega lok adalat. He also interacted with litigants and judicial officers. Justice M.M. Kumar and Justice Jasbir Singh accompanied him. Amritsar: In all 35,596 cases were settled and compensation worth Rs 45 crore was awarded to the litigants in two-day “Samadhan-2008”, mega lok adalat, that concluded here today. Addressing a function organised by the District Bar Association on the conclusion of the mega lok adalat, T.S. Thakur, Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court, said a multi-pronged approach had been adopted to reduce the pendency of court cases, including recruitment of judicial officers, setting up of a judicial academy to ensure comprehensive training of judicial officers to make them more efficient, creation of mediation cells, besides organising regular lok adalats. He elaborated that “Samadhan” was entirely different from the routine lok adalats as it included not only the disposal of pending court cases but also other matters which were on pre-litigation stage and concerned to various departments like executive, revenue and different tribunals. He informed that on the inaugural day of the mega lok adalat about five lakh cases were settled, out of which 2.40 lakh in Punjab and remaining 2.60 lakh in Haryana. Thakur informed that during the current year the Punjab and Haryana High Court had not only increased its working hours but also working days. According to him, during the past four months pendency of cases was lowered to the tune of 11,000 cases. Jasbir Singh, administrative judge, Amritsar district, said the two-day court had disposed of 30,000 cases against the target of 10,000 cases. Gurdaspur: As many as 17,658 cases pertaining to various types of disputes pending in various courts in the district were settled in one go in the two-day mega lok adalat organised by the Punjab and Haryana High Court under its Samadhan-2008 project, which concluded late last evening. More than 20,000 cases were taken up in 32 lok adalats organised in Gurdaspur, Batala and Pathankot towns in the past two days. The mega lok adalat was inaugurated by Vinod Kumar Sharma, judge, high court. M.S. Chohan, district sessions judge, Gurkirat Kirpal Singh, deputy commissioner, and Lok Nath Angra, SSP, were present at the function where the compensations to the tune of Rs 37.90 crore were awarded to the parties in varoius disputes. |
