Make theatre education compulsory Drama is exposure; it is confrontation; it is contradiction and it leads to analysis, construction, recognition and eventually to an awakening of understanding. — Peter Brooks That’s the power of theatre. Yet, the Indian education system has failed to recognise its far-reaching potential in stirring young minds. At best, then theatre is reduced to an annual ritual in which schools go gung-ho over creating a production invariably targeted to attain media mileage or score brownie points over other schools. But now this all set to change. New syllabi of the NCERT from Classes I to X intend to upgrade arts education—theatre, music dance and visual arts—from a mere pastime to regular subjects in the curriculum. “Why not?” is the unanimous riposte of theatre fraternity. Says Balwant Thakur, an eminent Jammu-based theatre person, whose group Natrang has been running weekend theatre for children, “Theatre has the singular ability to transform. Besides, it’s a great confidence booster, the kind no number of education degrees can instil.” Zulfiqar Khan, who in his 18 years of theatre experience of working with underprivileged children has seen theatre change young one’s lives miraculously, echoes similar sentiments, “Is there a book called confidence? But theatre is the very embodiment of confidence”. Kamal Tewari, chairperson, Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademy, argues, “Actually, it’s pointless to have graduation and post-graduation courses in theatre until theatre is included at the elementary levels. It’s like creating a building without the basic foundation.” Interestingly, it’s the National School of Drama, Delhi, where most students gain admission on dint of their personal efforts that has long since recognised the role of theatre in education. Its ambitious TIE programme has done commendable work. TIE has also conducted workshops with NCERT on a pilot project based on “Theatre Movement at Primary Level” for different sections of teachers. Actually, the role of arts education in India was felt way back in 1967. However, it was only a few years ago that the National Curriculum Framework, with celebrated singer Shuba Mudgal chairing the focus group on art education, decided to give arts education the necessary impetus. Till now efforts to use theatre as tool have been confined to individual enterprise and hence have been sporadic and inconsistent. For instance, in Chandigarh, S. K. Setia, former DPI, Schools, had set the ball rolling. He had targeted government schools by involving city-based theatre groups. Recalls Sudesh Sharma, whose group Theatre for Theatre had played a significant role in this endeavour, “Nearly 20 government schools were in the ambit. Out of this, eight schools were able to evolve productions.” Khan chips in, “We had designed plays in accordance with the syllabus for what children do, and they always remember”. Sadly, the project fell flat after Setia’s transfer to another department. In the Pink City (Jaipur), Gagan Mishra has been able to motivate six schools to include theatre syllabus, which he and his sister Priyadarshini Mishra have designed. In fact, he is positive that theatre education in schools is an inevitable reality. He claims, “The stage is set and now nothing can stall it”. Thakur senses an urgent need too, “Theatre is not only a great learning experience but a very real career choice too. With so many TV and radio channels in the offing, theatre students will be handpicked.” Now the moot question is: will the proposed move actually be implemented? Mrs Daman Duggal, principal, Vivek High School, Chandigarh, while revealing that the school has as yet not received any such directive welcomes the idea wholeheartedly. She says the school will make necessary changes to incorporate arts, especially theatre, as a regular subject, for the school is only too aware of its potential. Many other public schools too have not only employed theatre instructors but are trying to involve as many children as possible. However, what of the government schools which lack even the basic infrastructure? Will it then be yet another feather in the crown of the elite public schools which have already woken up to the inherent possibilities of theatre to some extent? Nevertheless, it’s clear that more and more education planners are realising what W. B. Yeats said: “Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of fire.” And theatre sure can ignite young impressionable minds.

HAU, CIRB ink MoU
Haryana Agricultural University and the Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (CIRB) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to extend cooperation in academic and research activities. The two institutions have agreed to extend their respective expertise and facilities to M.Sc, M.V.Sc and Ph.D students of HAU to conduct research which matches mandate of the CIRB. HAU Registrar R. S. Dalal said earlier in 1994, an agreement was signed between both the institutes for similar collaboration but it failed to serve its purpose. Now, after a review, the lacunae in earlier MoU had been removed. He said the MoU would be operational for five years or until a notice of termination was served by either party. CIRB Director, Dr R. K. Sethi, said similar agreements were being made with other universities of the state. The MoU, he said, would facilitate sharing of facilities created with heavy public investments.
Refresher course on social sciences research
A refresher course on "Methods in Social Science Research - Recent Advances" was organised at the university recently. Apart from Haryana, social scientists from Maharashtra also participated in the three-week course which was organised by the Department of Sociology in collaboration with the Academy of Agricultural Research & Education Management (AAREM) of the university. Savita Vermani, Head of the Sociology Department and Course Director, said participants were enlightened on the latest conceptual methods and techniques in social science research apart from equipping them with various statistical methods and use of computers in social research. — Contributed by Raman Mohan
