Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira has written to UK’s former First Lady Cherie Blair to have appropriate information about the people she endorses as role models for the youth of this country in future.
Blair had projected former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur as a role model for the youngsters at a function organised by the Loomba Trust at a school function at Dhilwan yesterday. Blair is the president of the trust that gives scholarships to hundreds of orphans in India.
In a letter written to her, Khaira has drawn Blair’s attention towards the murder charges being faced by the Bibi for allegedly killing her daughter in addition to a case of power theft. The Bibi’s stint as the committee chief too had been marred by several controversies, he points out.
“Your public appearance with her has sent a wrong signal to the youth, especially the girls, and could have a bearing on the proceedings of the murder trial that is nearing completion,” he writes.
Nevertheless, he has praised Cherie’s stature as a successful lawyer, charity work and as a roving ambassador on various international issues. “In the interest of espousing exemplary international moral standards, I urge you to revise your public statement lest the youth of India start following in the footsteps of leaders involved in serious criminal cases, he added.
