Chandigarh, November 18
A senior Haryana bureaucrat on election duty in Madhya Pradesh, Dr Harbaksh Singh, has been immediately withdrawn from observer duty for “drunken behaviour”.

Sources said the Election Commission of India had recalled Dr Harbaksh Singh, who was sent on duty to Morena in Madhya Pradesh recently. It is learnt that while on duty he got drunk and created a scene in an inebriated state.

Following the incident, the district administration sent a written complaint about the incident to the Election Commission of India, which decided to immediately recall him from duty.

Sources in the commission said Dr Harbaksh Singh had not only been called back from duty, but had also been “barred” from being put on election duty. While he would not be eligible for election duty from now on, this complaint and action would be put into his record as well.

However, the quantum of punishment for Dr Harbaksh Singh is yet to be decided and under consideration of the Election Commission of India. Sources said the commission was in favour of suspension of the officer in question.

Chief secretary Dharam Vir said the state government had not been sent any information in this regard so far and the officer concerned too was yet to report back.
