New Delhi, November 13
Having sacked former Congress general secretary Margaret Alva for charging the Congress with selling party ticket, the Congress today turned around and sacked its senior Dalit leader Yogendra Makwana for supporting Alva’s charge.
The AICC announced that, “Congress president Sonia Gandhi today removed former union minister Yogendra Makwana from the post of chairman of the Scheduled Caste Department of the AICC for publicly criticising the policies and functioning of the party for quite a long time.”
The statement issued by the AICC said the 75-year-old leader's conduct “amounted to gross indiscipline.”
Makwana, a veteran leader from Gujarat, had upheld Alva’s charge that the party had put ticket on ‘sale’ for contesting assembly elections.
Makwana had publicly demanded a probe into her charge. A defiant Makwana, however claimed that he was not bothered by the disciplinary action, indicating that he would be parting ways with the Congress this week, he accused the Congress-led government at the Centre of doing little for Dalits and the tribals.
AICC general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said Makwana had been publicly criticising the policies and functioning of the party for quite a long time amounting to gross indiscipline.
“Party has taken a serious view of his conduct and consequently the Congress president has relieved him from the chairmanship of the SC Department of the AICC with immediate effect,” he said.”
