Unfortunately, it is the death of 46 persons in a major accident near Kufri which woke up the authorities to check rash driving, overloading, untrained drivers, mechanically unfit buses, poor roads and other such factors that have been the cause for the death of 7,912 persons in road accidents during the past 10 years in the state.

Migratory birds throng Pong Lake

With the onset of winter migratory birds have started thronging the Pong Dam lake on the foothills of Kangra district. The Pong Wetland, also known as Maharana Pratap Sagar, is spread over 24,000 hectares in Jawali, Dehra and Nurpur subdivisions.

Kumarhatti, November 11 Standing tall for ages amidst dense pine forest on a hilltop, Banasar Fort, 20 km from here, is now on the verge of collapse. The huge walls of the fort resemble unique guts of Gurkhas, whose army chief Amar Singh Thapha is believed to have built this fort to counter the British, have now started developing cracks.

Preparing to manage natural disasters
Shimla, November 11
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) held a mock drill for undertaking rescue and relief operations in case of an earthquake in the town. The fact that many parts of the state, including Chamba, Kangra and Shimla, fall in the high seismic zones IV and V. There is need to ban all multi-storeyed buildings and construction activity in the sliding zones.
