Fiscal meltdown casts shadow on Divali

The global financial meltdown has cast its shadow on the Divali celebrations in a big way. Even after a day before this festival, markets have failed to attract customers. A majority of the markets have been wearing a virtually deserted look as sales have failed to pick up.

People gear up for the festival of lights

Slum dwellers will have to wait for pucca houses
Jalandhar, October 27
A Rs 42.4-crore integrated housing slum development scheme of the central government, under which the municipal corporation was to provide pucca houses to more than 2,300 slum dwellers, has been put off as of now.

Warrants against railways for non-compliance of order
Similar action in two other cases
Jalandhar, October 27
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum today issued conditional warrants in three cases for non-compliance of its orders. The forum presided over by Surinder Mittal issued conditional warrants against the Railways for attachment of Rs 53,000 as pay order for non-compliance of the order passed by it on April 30 this year.

Village pond encroached upon
Jalandhar, October 27
An aged man, Harbhajan Singh, resident of Khambra village, alleged that some persons had encroached upon the land of village pond in connivance with the panchayat.

Four-laning of Jalandhar road next month: DC
Kapurthala, October 27
The work on the four-laning of the Kapurthala-Jalandhar road will start next month as Rs 9.54 crore has been sanctioned under the central road funds. This was disclosed by deputy commissioner J.M. Balamurugan in a press conference here.

To celebrate the tercentenary of the Gurta Gaddi Divas of Sri Guru Granth Sahib with devotion, the All-India Radio, Jalandhar, organised “Sarb Hind Trilingual Kavi Darbar - Mahima Sri Guru Granth Sahib Di” in the main studio of the Doordarshan Centre here on Saturday night.
