Amritsar, October 20
Additional deputy commissioner (ADC), Tarn Taran, Kirpal Singh (51), died due to renal failure in a private hospital at Mohali last night. He was cremated with state honours here today. He died after fighting for life for more than one month.

Kirpal Singh had courted controversy as the Organ Transplant Authorisation Committee, headed by deputy commissioner, Tarn Taran, Khushi Ram, had given a go-ahead for the transplant of a kidney to him on September 25 though the donor was not related to him as required by the Act.

The unrelated donor, Sunny, a resident of Chhehrta (Amritsar), had stated that he was donating his organ out of “love and affection”, but he did a U-turn following family pressure.

The committee had revoked the permission for the transplant of Sunny’s kidney to the ADC amid a raging controversy.

The SSP, Amritsar, had told the civil surgeon that the police had not verified the aspects of monitory and other considerations regarding the organ donation.

Suman Rani, Sunny’s mother, had filed a petition against the members of the authorisation committee.
