Guwahati, October 7
With the recovery of more bodies from some violence affected areas and death occurring to at least five injured in hospitals, the death toll in the current spell of communal violence in Assam has gone up to 51 even as the government claims that situation was still tense.

State principal secretary, home, Subhas Chandra Das informed that 10 additional companies of the BSF were deployed in the two violence-affected districts of Udalguri and Darrang. Already 16 columns of the Army were in action in the two districts along with police and paramilitary forces.

“The death toll has gone up to 51 today after the security forces recovered six bodies from different areas. Five injured succumbed in hospitals. There was no report of fresh violence so far today, but situation was very tense,” the official said.

The number of riot-hit people in refugee camps has soared to over 1.55 lakh. There were over 88,000 affected people in 46 refugee camps in Udalguri district and over 67,000 in 38 refugee camps in Darrang districts. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said, “Though there has been no report of fresh violence since yesterday, the vigil has been augmented through the deployment of additional forces. I have been in constant touch with the respective district administrations and security forces and have asked them not to be complacent and to deal those forces trying to engineer rift among the communities with an iron hand.”
