Maya wants BPL quota hiked
Tribune News Service

Lucknow, October 4
Chief Minister Mayawati has written to the Prime Minister to suitably revise Uttar Pradesh’s fixed quota of 99 lakh below poverty line (BPL) families, which had been fixed six years ago.

In her letter, Mayawati has noted that during this corresponding period the net population of state had increased.

“Though the percentage of people living below the poverty line could have decreased but the possibility of it actually going up cannot be ruled out”.

Meanwhile, the CM has decided to postpone the ongoing BPL survey work saying that, “the present time was not proper for it.”

This decision was taken following a high-level meeting to review the ongoing revision of the BPL list.

After the meeting she directed all district magistrates for including the names of eligible persons in the BPL list and delete the names that have entered violating the norms fixed by the government of India.

She said the survey for selection of BPL families would now be done on the basis
of re-scheduled norms after a high-level central government committee presents
its report.
