New Delhi, October 3
The government today approved the conversion of three state universities into central ones. These include Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh and Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Srinagar in Uttarakhand.
Sources in HRD ministry had earlier told The Tribune about many demands from Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh to convert the said universities into central ones.
The Union Cabinet today approved the demand for upgradation of HN Bahuguna varsity and the other two above-stated universities. The only state university converted as Central on merit is Goa University. Ironically, the HRD ministry has not been very keen on converting the existing states universities as Central.
The Cabinet also approved the establishment of 12 new Central universities in 12 states namely Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu with Central government funding. The government will introduce the Central Universities Bill in Parliament in the forthcoming session.
