Farmers’ woes continue as paddy awaits lifting
Bathinda, September 25 Farmers are a harassed lot in the
district due to the non-lifting of paddy by the commission agents and the government agencies as well. Buta Singh, a farmer of Aklia
village said more than 20,000 bags of paddy are lying in the Goniana mandi till date. Paddy worth about
Rs 1.70 crore is piled up in the grain market. Buta Singh said that commission agents were not giving their due of Rs 850 per quintal as fixed by the government. He informed this correspondent that commission agents were pressing upon them to purchase their paddy at Rs 825. Buta Singh demanded the immediate lifting of piled up paddy lying in the mandi. Daler Singh, a farmer of Kothe village, said he has harvested 10 acres of paddy and rushed the produce to the market about a week ago but has not been able to sell his produce to meet his everyday needs. He said that the delay in the payment would affect the timely cultivation of rabi crop because farmers will not be able to purchase the desired quantity of fertilisers. Talking to TNS here, Sukhdev Singh, a farmer from Bahalad Mehma village, said he had been in the market for the past 10 days and trying to reduce moisture content to bring it to the level of satisfaction of procurement agencies. He said four members of his family were looking after the produce at the market, while there was no one to care for the remaining crop in his village. Sukhdev rued that he had been shelling out Rs 200 daily in the market and still didn’t know when his paddy would be procured. Joginder Singh, another farmer from his village, came to the market three days back. According to him his paddy was okay, but he was told to dry it further to bring down the moisture within permissible limits. Similarly, Karnail Singh, who had brought 16 quintals of paddy to the market, had been awaiting procurement for the past five days. When contacted, Dipesh Singh, a Food Corporation of India official, said he had received a complaint about non-lifting of paddy and had asked its officials to speed up the process. He said though he was not satisfied with the work of other agencies, still he would ask them to expedite procurement to ensure that the farmers didn’t have to wait long for it. |

Location of toll plazas triggers controversy
Fazilka, September 25 The stretch in a very bad shape for long period was repaired about an year back and the control of the highway was transferred to a private concern, the Chetak Enterprises Limited, on the BOT scheme. The company built toll plaza check posts at two places even before construction of the flyovers on the railway crossing. Their locations have raised a controversy. The first toll plaza on the Fazilka-Ferozepur road is located at distance of 10 km from Fazilka near Theh Qalandar village. The second toll plaza is located before Goluka turn to Guruharsahai town on the Fazilka-Ferozepur road at a distance of about 45 km. At present, there is much resentment among the residents of Fazilka, Jalalabad and surrounding areas. Those travelling on four-wheelers from Fazilka have to shell out Rs 23 as toll fee for one side trip to Jalalabad and the similar amount if they want to travel up to Guruharsahai town or Ferozepur. The residents of Fazilka have to pay Rs 46 for one side travel of 45 km, which is considered exorbitant. In sharp contrast, the residents beyond the second toll plaza living in area of about 45 km, including those of Guruharsahai town, have to pay nothing for their journey up to Ferozepur. The Fazilka residents feel that the second toll plaza has been located before the turn to Guruharsahai due to alleged political influence of the then Parliamentary Secretary Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, Congress MLA,
Guruharsahai, who reportedly succeeded in getting the toll plaza located at the place so as to benefit the residents of
Guruharsahai. The residents feel that the second toll plaza should have been built at a distance of 5 to 10 km near Ferozepur. They also maintain that such discrimination is largely due to lack of political representatives of Fazilka and Jalalabad areas. |
