Crafty conmen target elderly

Racketeers are on the prowl to dupe the elderly gullible couples under the guise of offering genuine assistance in various banks and other public institutions. Generally they are outsiders who pick up their old-age victims in the periphery of the institutions by showing willingness to take up petty errands without any motive.

Public bodies protest ‘lawlessness’ in city
Tarn Taran, September 5 A large number of workers of different public organisations under the banner of the Joint Platform of Mass Organisations (JPMO) gheraoed of the office of the local SSP protesting against the alleged police atrocities against the common man. The normal traffic remained blocked in the town for hours together due to the gherao.

The committee constituted by the principal, Government Medical College (GMC), here, to probe into the alleged violations of safety code and norms by certain X-ray centres in the city, has failed to submit its report in the stipulated period.

To garner public support on the need for strict observation of traffic rules, the NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and BCom students of DAV College, Hathi Gate, organised a silent traffic awareness march here on September 3.

College teachers stage dharna
Amritsar, September 5
On the call given by Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU), a protest dharna was organised in different colleges today. The teachers are agitating against the ‘indifferent and callous attitude’ of state government towards their long- pending demands, including lifting ban on recruitments, parity in pay scales, stagnation increments etc. 

Man booked for raping mother-in-law 
Amritsar, September 5 Beas police have booked a man for allegedly raping his mother-in-law. The accused, identified as Onkar Singh is an ex-driver of controversial Nihang chief Ajit Singh Poohla, who was recently burned to death by two inmates of Amritsar Central Jail.
