Caparo Crisis
Jalandhar, August 20 “It seems the most feasible idea right now. We don’t want their studies to suffer,” said varsity registrar Sarojini Gautam Sharda, while talking to The Tribune today. The decision would be made official after a special board meeting is convened on the matter and all the officials give their nod in writing on the circular. But the students are not fully convinced with the idea. “We will be making a big compromise. We came here for specialised training. A year ago, we had so many options, but now we can’t do much except curse ourselves for the choice we made,” said a student representative, pleading anonymity. The students have a sound reason to express their grouse against the system, for, it’s they who are bearing the brunt of the administrative tussle. “Going by the present situation, getting an engineering degree on time would be our greatest achievement. We have already lost precious study time. The authorities need to make a quick decision now,” said another student. However, the final decision does not seem to coming in the near future. Even as Swraj Paul has already made it clear that either he would run the institute or the PTU, the official formalities, legal wrangles and technical glitches will certainly take a lot of time to clear. And since one of the partners is based in UK, the delay is inevitable. |

Illegal kiosks, shops demolished in Rama Mandi area
Jalandhar, August 20 The area which was cleared today was encroached upon by lottery vendors, tea-stall owners, barbers and washer men. Expressing their resentment, kiosk-owners said the untimely action of the authorities have left them in deep trouble. “I have been running a tea stall here since 1962. I don’t have any other source of income. The demolition has put my family’s future
in jeopardy,” said Rajinder Kumar. The kiosk-owners claimed that the authorities had given them just a day’s notice. However, a board official Tejinder Singh said the notice was issued six months ago. “The notice issued on August 18 was a reminder. Since they did not budge, we had to carry out the drive,” he added. |

Manufacturing Trouble
Hoshiarpur, August 20 Sukdev Singh had complained to forum that the Honda Eterno scooter purchased by him on March 31, 2006 from the local Punj Autos was a faulty one. The complainant said he had to get the clutch plates changed at a cost of Rs 900 soon after the purchase. Just two days after, the vehicle developed a snag again and when he approached the dealer he was told that the engine of the scooter needs to be changed. Sukhdev claimed that since the scooter was in the warranty period he told the dealer that he was not liable to pay Rs 9,000 cost for changing the engine. However, the dealer failed to replace or change the engine. The company officials admitted that the vehicle in question was produced on various occasions for service. “But it was delivered in a defect-free condition to Sukhdev,” they claimed. The company also denied that there was any manufacturing defect in the scooter. “Some minor defects were found but they were rectified,” they said, adding that the complainant had failed to get the vehicle serviced as per the schedule. The consumer forum held that though the scooter has already covered more than 25,000 km till date, the owner has successfully proved on record that there was a manufacturing defect in the vehicle and the maker has failed to rectify the same. “It amounts to deficiency in service,” observed the forum, adding that it will not be appropriate to give maker a direction to replace the scooter, but Sukdev is certainly entitled for compensation. |

Now, volunteers to bail out struggling one-man schools
Jalandhar, August 20 The SSA has earmarked as many as 98 elementary schools in the district for this purpose. Under the upcoming project, District project coordinator, SSA, Rajiv Kumar Joshi said, “We have already started the process of recruiting education volunteers in the schools. Over the last some years, we had been getting reports of many schools being managed by single teacher alone. Through this process we would be able to maintain a good teacher-student ratio,” he said, adding that the ultimate aim was to upgrade the standard of education as well as to reduce the burden on teachers too. And to accomplish the project, the SSA officials have started recruiting unemployed B.Ed and postgraduate youth from villages and urban areas in these schools. The SSA has taken the help of the Urban Education Development Committees (UEDC) and Village Education Development Committees (VEDC) to recruit the teachers. The block resource persons (BRPs) and block primary officers (BPOs) are also looking after the project and helping the SSA officials in finding suitable candidates for it. “We have completed nearly 50 per cent of the process. They further said that Majithia, who had been thrust upon the people as a Cabinet minister, was yet to come of age and was issuing statements against Capt Amarinder Singh out of frustration as Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his coterie were haunted by nightmares and hallucinations after the huge rally organised by the Congress at Baba Bakala on August 16. Taking a dig at Majithia, Sukhjinder Randhawa said Majithia should refrain from making such mischievous statements as he had no stature to comment on senior leaders like Capt Amarinder Singh. He said Majithia had become minister not due to his capability but for being the brother-in-law of Sukhbir Badal. The elevation of Capt Amarinder Singh as chairman of the Campaign Committee had infused a new courage amongst Congress workers. Even some Akalis would join the party in the coming days, he claimed. Randhawa said the Congress under the leadership of Capt Amarinder Singh would wipe out the SAD in the forthcoming parliamentary elections and win all 13 seats. |
