Tribune News Service

Jammu, August 16
Two majors and a jawan were killed when an Army helicopter on a rescue mission crashed in eastern Ladakh due to bad weather on Friday.

The victims are Major Padmanabhan and Major S. Ganapathy of the Army Aviation Squadron located at Leh and sepoy E. Narshai. Both the majors were pilots and were sent to evacuate Narshai.

The helicopter, according to the Jammu-based PRO of the ministry of defence, lost contact with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) while returning to Leh.

“Another helicopter was immediately sent on a search mission but no contact was made with the missing helicopter, after which the mission was aborted,” PRO Goswami said.

“The aerial search was re-launched in the early morning today and the wreckage of the crashed helicopter was found near a mountain pass,” he added. Meanwhile, the Army has ordered a court of enquiry into the matter.
