Power-sharing deal still in limbo
But new alliance agrees to form 24-member cabinet
Bishnu Budhathoki writes from Kathmandu

The newly formed political alliance, comprising mainly CPN-Maoist, CPN-UML and Madhesi People's Rights Forum (MPRF), failed to settle the power-sharing deal for the formation of the new cabinet to be formed under the newly-elected Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dhal alias Prachanda.

A meeting of top-three party leaders held at Maoist central office in Kathmandu on Saturday, however, reached an agreement to constitute a 24-member cabinet and almost finalised the working procedure for the formation of the new government and code of conducts to be enforced for the ministers.

Emerging from the meeting, Maoist second-in-command Dr Baburam Bhattarai said, "Three parties have agreed to form a 24-member council of ministers. But the issue over the power-sharing deal will be sorted out by Monday before President Ram Baran Yadav administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly-elected PM Prachanda."

According to a party source, the meeting could not finalise the power-sharing deal when the MPRF leaders claimed for deputy prime minister, foreign ministry and information and communication ministry in the new cabinet.

MPRF central leader B.P. Yadav said his party would support the government staying outside from it if they fail to get a respectable position in the government.

Meanwhile, CPN-UML general secretary Jhalanath Khanal said the top-brass leaders of the new alliance would finalise the common minimum programme and make it public by Sunday.

Prachanda to take oath tomorrow
Bishnu Budhathoki writes from Kathmandu

Immediately after the Constituent Assembly elected the CPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, alias Prachanda, as the new Prime Minister of Nepal, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Saturday invited Prachanda to take the oath of office and secrecy. Congratulating him on being elected, Yadav invited Prachanda to take the oath of office and secrecy on Monday at Rastrapati Bhawan in Sital Niwas.

According to a source, secretary at the Presidential Office, Dr Ram Hari Aryal, handed over the congratulatory message and invitation of swearing-in ceremony to Prachanda today on behalf of the President.

As per the interim constitutional provision, the new Prime Minster must take the oath of office and secrecy from the President.

Prachanda, whom his party had projected as the first President of the republic of Nepal during the April 10 Constituent Assembly election was elected as the first Prime Minister of the republic of Nepal with an overwhelming majority on Friday.

It ended the three-month long political impasses over the formation of the post-election government.

Promises to reopen closed industries

Meanwhile, Prachanda said today that his government would soon be reopening all industries and business enterprises that were closed down earlier due to Maoist threats. While meeting with a delegation of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), an umbrella organisation of business entrepreneurs this morning at his residence, Prachanda assured that he would take initiative to reopen such industries soon.
