The Congress-led
UPA government is fighting with its back to the wall as
frantic efforts to drum up requisite support for the
crucial trust vote on July 22 are running into constant
roadblocks. As the magic figure of 272 continued to
elude the ruling coalition, Congress crisis managers
spent the day wooing three key players-Shibu Soren of
the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Ajit Singh of the
Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Deve Gowda of the Janata Dal
(S)-but failed to get any commitment from them. |

Dera
men, Sikhs clash: 1 killed
Curfew in Dabwali
Dabwali, July 18
The Sikh-Dera Sacha Sauda
row raised its ugly head once again today when a Sikh activist
died following a clash between the two groups in this
subdivision early this morning. Following the incident, the
mob went on the rampage and resorted to arson. Property worth
lakhs and vehicles were set ablaze. Four persons, including
mediapersons, were injured.

Grenade
attack in Banihal: 36 hurt
Udhampur, July 18
At least 36 persons, including one
assistant commandant and a sub-inspector of the 89 Battalion of the CRPF,
were injured in a grenade attack at Banihal in Ramban district on the
Jammu-Srinagar National Highway today. Eight students, including six
girls, also suffered injuries in the explosion which occurred at the bus
stand near Government Higher Secondary School.

Bapu Asaram’s
men go on rampage
Ahmedabad, July 18
A protest over the mysterious death
of two boys studying in a school of popular spiritual guru Asaram Bapu
turned violent today with angry people attacking mediapersons and
setting fire to vehicles and even homes. Bapu, who has a huge global
following, himself faced irate crowds and barely managed to flee as a
mob surrounded his car.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder
Singh Hooda, who was to participate in at least six functions in Kaithal,
curtailed his visit and rushed to New Delhi in the wake of political
developments at the centre. Sources said he left after Lok Sabha MP from
Karnal Arvind Sharma showered praises on BSP chief and UP Chief Minister
Mayawati.

‘miracle’ baba goes down never to come up
Dehra Dun, July 18
Performing a yogic miracle proved
costly for a ‘baba’ in Ramnagar town of Nainital district last
evening. Baba Shiv Dass, a sadhu who claimed himself to be a yoga guru,
had gone into an underground samadhi on July 11 amidst much fanfare on
the premises of Sidheshwar temple in Ramnagar. He took the step in the
presence of thousands of devout, mostly women, who converged at the site
of his samadhi on July 11.
