Life on the edge

Sandeep Sinha recalls his visit to the international border at Bhaini Dilawar village in the Fazilka sector

Living in a border state and the charm of discovering what it is like to be living on the edge had been gnawing at me. Finally, I found myself staring across the fencing with its floodlights and the dreaded Cobra wire with a pair of binoculars in my hand. We were at Ground Zero. BSF Assistant Commandant S.B. Mukherjee was to be our friend, philosopher and guide in that tough terrain.

Fences and neighbours
Another issue in the border districts is the shifting of the barbed wire fencing along the international border (IB). Villagers are demanding that the fencing should be done at a distance of mere 50 yards from the international border. They say it will make farming easier for them as then there will be no need for gate passes, identity cards and the hassle of opening and closing the gates by the BSF men.

UITAR and bass are passé. Now it’s instruments like the tabla, sitar, flute and harmonium that are being used to create ‘alternative progressive rock’ — a new genre that is fast becoming a rage among the youth in urban India. Although international bands and artists like Rasmus, Limp Bizkit, Nirvana and Linkin Park are popular in the country for playing traditional rock and heavy metal, home-grown bands like Euphoria, Parikrama, Indian Ocean, Avial and others are trying to explore new avenues in rock, with an Indian flavour.

Tribute to a father
I learnt from my father the value of hard work and integrity. His professional career spanned over 40 years. He never took sick leave and never made a dishonest penny. He encouraged us to aspire higher. He was also a compassionate man. We were taught to treat everyone with respect and affection, says Sukhdeep Brar

E copy the US culture in many ways while simultaneously denouncing its widespread adoption. Valentine’s Day celebration is an intrusion not only into the romantic but also the material life of a growing number of (mostly young) people. But there are two days that the US celebrates that pass unnoticed each year in India, which we might well emulate.

Look fit in your swimsuit
Your swimsuit must accentuate your positive features, says Neela Chopra

OW that summer is in full swing, there is nothing more welcoming than a swim after slogging all day in the office/house. Being the holiday season you might even go to exciting beaches to burn out those calories and get back into shape. Get back into shape, that is the significant phrase that brings us into discussion on how to select a swimsuit for your beach/pool outings.
