Sharp differences on appointment of judges
Chandigarh, June 10
The Punjab and Haryana High Court is in crisis again. This time it is on the issue of appointment of Additional District and Sessions Judges in Punjab. The process of filling up over a score of vacancies of the Additional District and Sessions Judges in the state has been awaiting a decision by the five-member administrative committee of the HC, led by Chief Justice Vijender Jain.

N. N. Vohra to be J&K Governor
N.N. Vohra
New Delhi, June 10
Former union home secretary N.N. Vohra will be the next Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, succeeding Lt-Gen S.K. Sinha (retd) whose five-year tenure ended last week. A formal announcement in this regard is expected anytime. This will be the first time in nearly two decades that the troubled state will have a Governor who does not have a military background.

Sacked UP minister arrested
Lucknow, June 10
Sacked UP Minister Jamuna Nishad is being taken to a local court after his arrest in connection with the murder of a constable, in Lucknow on Tuesday.
Former Uttar Pradesh minister Jamuna Nishad was finally arrested here today while on his way to meet Chief Minister Mayawati, three days after he led a protesting mob that killed a policeman leading to his own ouster from the government.

In a belated damage-control exercise, director-general of the Haryana police Ranjiv Dalal today dismissed two of his men, who were accused of raping a woman in Rohtak, invoking “extra-ordinary legal provisions.” The rape victim had committed suicide in the police headquarter in Panchkula yesterday after she failed to get justice from the Rohtak police.

Another Indian on death row in Pak: Burney
Islamabad, June 10
After Kashmir Singh, leading Pakistani rights activist Ansar Burney has found another Indian on death row languishing in a jail in Punjab province since 1992. Burney, former Pakistan human rights minister, said today that the workers of his organisation had come across Karpal Singh in the course of their welfare work in prisons.

150 hurt in clashes
Kolkata, June 10
On the first day of the indefinite strike in Darjeeling, activists of the Gorkha JanMukti Morcha (GJM) and the CPM involved in clashes at six places in the planes of Siliguri and the Duars in which over 150 persons were injured. Several GJM workers were also injured following police action to control the situation.

Farmers face acute labour shortage
Chandigarh, June 10
A new crisis has gripped the Punjab farmer this paddy season with a severe reduction in the arrival of migrant labour from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh increasing paddy transplantation costs by the double. The state farmer, who had been restrained by the government from going in for sowing of paddy till today to deal with the problem of ground water depletion, now has to contend with transplanting paddy in 27,000 hectares without the required hands at his disposal.
