Amritsar, May 21
Manjinder Singh Kang, MLA from Beas, who today played hide and seek with the party leadership, was admitted to Escorts Hospital here due to some minor heart problem late in the evening.

Though rumours of his having resigned from the Assembly were rife throughout the day, it was learnt that Kang had decided not to resign following the assurance of Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema, adviser to CM, who visited him in the hospital, that his grievances, if any, would be redressed.

Dr Cheema was deputed by the CM to find the whereabouts of Kang and to persuade him not to resign as MLA.

The development came on the eve of Amritsar (South) bypoll, scheduled to be held tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Dr H.P. Singh, medical superintendent of the hospital, said that the ECG performed on Kang was found to be normal.

Earlier in the day, Jagir Singh, a senior SGPC member and paternal uncle of Kang, claimed that he (Kang) had sent his resignation to Punjab Vidhan Sabha speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon, while the latter denied that he had received it.

Rajinder, personal assistant to Kang, also confirmed that he had sent his resignation to the speaker. However, Kahlon, while speaking to The Tribune, said that Kang had neither contacted him nor had he sent his resignation.

Talking to The Tribune, uncle of Kang, Jagir Singh, SGPC member, alleged that his nephew had to resign following the rejection of papers of Akali candidates during the panchayat elections.

The SGPC member alleged that the bureaucrats were not giving any importance to Kang that forced him to take the extreme step of resigning from the Assembly. He also levelled serious allegations against Bikram Singh Majithia, minister, public relations.

However, when contacted, Majithia denied any interference in the constituency of Kang. He further claimed that he had confirmed from every quarter that Kang had not sent his resignation to party president or speaker. He claimed that the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections were held in a free and fair manner and his own candidate had lost by a margin of only five votes, which showed that the election machinery acted in a fair manner.

Despite repeated attempts, the phone of Kang was picked up by Rajinder, his personal assistant, who gave stock reply that he (Kang) was not available since morning.
