New Delhi, May 15
While the rift between Pakistan’s coalition partners, the PPP and PML-N appears to be widening over the reinstatement of sacked judges, senior PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim today maintained there was no political crisis in the country and there was scope for a rapprochement between the two parties.
Fahim, who is in India on a private visit, admitted that there were differences between Pakistan’s two coalition partners but was optimistic that they will be able to find some meeting ground in the coming days.
“Some solution will be found....talks between the two have not broken down completely,” he said, adding that the PML-N had not quit the government while their coalition government in Punjab remained intact.
The main electoral plank of Nawaz Sharif’s party, Fahim explained, had been the restoration of the sacked judges, while the PPP had fought on basic issues of “roti, kapda aur makan”. He said the PPP also favoured the
reinstatement of the sacked judges but the two parties differ on the modalities to be adopted in this regard.
Fahim, who was the PPP’s original choice for the Prime Minister’s post, was careful not to say anything out of place in his interactions with the press here. Whether it was about the domestic crisis, the Kashmir issue, the Jaipur bomb blasts or the upcoming talks between the two foreign ministers, Fahim’s comments were, at best “politically correct.”
The PPP leader struck the right note as he cancelled his visit to Kashmir following the Jaipur blasts which, he described as “unfortunate” and the handiwork of forces which did not want relations between India and Pakistan to be strengthened.
“The PPP has always condemned all violence. We want relations between the two countries to improve and more people-to-people contact,” he said.
