3 foundry workers asphyxiated
Tribune News Service

Karnal, May 9
Three factory workers died due to asphyxia at a local foundry unit after they fell into a tank early this morning. The police said a few workers at Prakash Iron Foundry on Hansi Road were cleaning the outlet when the incident took place.

Those killed are Akbar (45), Satish (35) and Jasmer (32). Another worker, Rajinder, managed to come out of the tank in a semi-conscious state.

The police said Baburam, owner of the foundry, had been booked for negligence at the workplace. However, no arrests had been made till the filing of this report.

Sources said Jasmer was asked to climb a chimney for cleaning a water tank. Due to the fumes emitted from the foundry chimney, he was rendered unconscious and fell into the tank. Baburam then asked two other workers to climb the chimney and oversee the work, but they too met the same fate. Meanwhile, CPM cadres today staged a dharna and demanded financial aid to the poor families of the victims.
