AT present our education system is in a big chaos because there is a craze for seeking admission to public schools. It is emphatically pointed out that every child for our country has a fundamental right to receive education. As such, any nation of the world that denies children education can’t become strong and prosperous.

The pertinent question arises as to what should be the criteria for selecting the children for admission. In fact, it is ridiculous to have tests at the pre-nursery level. This is against the norms of educational ethics. Parents are hell-bent upon their children getting admitted to the public schools, and this has created a great tension not only in parents but also in children.

What can one expect a child of three-and-half years to say in an interview? The interview in the public schools seems to be mere an eyewash. In a survey it was revealed that in spite of some children’s excellent performance they were not selected. Many public schools are based on community lines, so children are selected on the basis of community or religion, not the performance alone.

Some teachers have stopped taking classes seriously as they are more interested in tuitions. Rising population is another problem that is a burden on educational institutions. School authorities have complained that there are more students than classrooms. New schools are not coming up in proportion to the growing population.

Some students and teachers have complained about the bulging syllabi. For instance a large number of Class XII science students say that the standard of physics is equivalent to the B.Sc. standard. The students of Class IX find science subjects complicated and difficult, whereas in Class X the syllabus is easier. This is causing serious psychological problems among children.

As the syllabus is voluminous, teachers adopt shortcuts to finish the course, thus badly damaging the standard of education.

Coming to university education, it seems to be extravagant and degree oriented. The absence of vocational training is responsible for the enormous unemployment among the educated persons. Thus, the educational system should be directed for emphasising the relevance of vocational training, so that many children could opt for self-employment.

Our educational system has created frustration among students, as bookish knowledge is not helpful in developing an integrated personality. J Krishnamurti, a well known philosopher, in his book, Education and Significance of Life, has rightly pointed out that education, as it is at present, encourages the understanding of the inherited tendencies and environmental influences which condition the mind and heart and sustain fear, and therefore it doesn’t help us to break through these conditionings and bring about an integrated human being.

We have made examinations and degree the criterion of intelligence and have developed cunning minds that avoid human issues. Krishnamurti emphatically pointed out that education should help us to discover lasting values. It is should help us to break our national and social barriers, instead of emphasising on them, for they breed antagonism between man and man Unfortunately, the present system of education is making us subservient, mechanical and deeply thoughtless, inwardly it leaves us incomplete stultified and uncreative.

Above all, education is theoretically oriented and the examination is mainly directed towards memorisation. Further, there is no arrangement to take care of one’s individuality and sense of creativity. There is often an absence of the teacher’s rapport with their students. The education system should help the student to develop an integrated personality.

Teachers are uploading tests online for students who are preparing for various entrance examinations, and even some regular courses, and in the process, some of them have found a lucrative outlet for their energies.

Our website has evoked 'overwhelming' response from the teaching community nationwide, and hundreds of satisfied teachers are uploading their tests on this unique website and are being financially benefited, said Kamal Wadhera, the CEO of tcyonline.com. "This, very large, teacher-student platform in the country is a real boon for teachers because now they can earn a life-long income through our website," he added.

Students can prepare for BEd, bank POs, BBA, BCA, GATE, GMT, Law, MBA, MCA and more than a dozen more tests. The company has devised a special formula for payment to teachers based on downloading of their tests and attempts made by students. Surpassing our all expectations, more and more teachers are flocking to this democratic platform every day and earning a handsome income," the CEO said.

This education company, engaged in school supplementary education and college test preparation for about a decade now, launched this unique platform mainly for teachers to enable them earn a steady monthly income by uploading their content on the website. Since the launch of this platform about couple of months back, nearly 2,500 teachers have registered themselves on the site and many of them have started earning from this platform.

Javed Ahmed, an IT professional-turned-online teacher, who started uploading his MBA tests about two months back, is a happy man today, thanks to the initiative by this website. "I couldn't imagine teachers can make such easy money until I came across this website while surfing the Net. Basically, I am an IT professional but the money through uploading tests has really supplemented my income," he said.

For a blogger-turned-online teacher, Rajiv Vashisht, this website has come as a 'good lucrative business'. He has uploaded quite a good number of MBA and English tests since the last one month. Vashisht is of the view the tests should be 'better categorised' for the convenience of the students and the payment system for the teachers should be further streamlined.

Manoj Dogra, an online teacher from Himachal Pradesh, is all praise for this 'totally unique' website. "While other websites charge money, to my knowledge tcyonline.com is the only website which is totally free for teachers and students," he said. Dogra is also running his own coaching institute for competitive exams.

The portal already has more than 80,000 enrollments. The company is fast moving to achieve its 100,000-enrollment target soon. On an average, over 5,000 students visit the site daily.

The tcyonline.com is currently paying a good amount to the teachers as per each test uploaded. On top of that, they are also making money since the students have started attempting these tests. So, in a way they can turn their one-time effort into a life-long earning.

Thousands of free downloadable tests are available on the website for school and college examinations apart from some competitive tests being held in the country from time to time. These practice tests help the student in not only assessing his or her level before the actual exam, but are a wonderful way to benchmark himself or herself with anybody and anywhere in country.

Vigilance probe leaves staff worried

Many officials of MDU, several of them holding key positions, were left having sleepless nights by the Vigilance Bureau team inquiring into the allegations of irregularities in the MD/MS/MDS/PG Diploma entrance examination conducted by the university recently.

The vigilance team visited the MDU campus several times in the past few days to gather evidence and record statements of the affected persons and officials concerned. In view of the serious allegations leveled by the medicos regarding the reported leakage and sale of entrance examination papers, many MDU officials involved in the conduct of examination remained apprehensive.

Now that the probe has been completed and the Vigilance Bureau team has left the campus, an uneasy calm prevails in MDU administrative departments. The focus is especially on the Controller of Examination and his staff.

UGC grant for advanced research
