New Delhi, April 22
Another incident of kidnapping of an Indian has come to light as suspected Taliban terrorists struck again against Indian interests in Afghanistan.
Mohammed Naim, an Indian working for a Dubai-based firm, was kidnapped from the Herat province of Afghanistan last evening, official sources said here today. He was travelling in a taxi and the police found his abandoned vehicle in Adraskan district.
It has not been established yet if the driver was behind the kidnapping or whether he was also kidnapped.
The details are not clear and the Indian mission is trying to get more facts from the local authorities. The fate of Naim is not known, as no outfit has claimed responsibility for the act and no ransom demand has been made till the time of filing of this report.
The incident is demonstrative of a renewed threat from a resurgent Taliban, which is dead against the Indian Border Roads Organisation’s ongoing highly strategic road project from Zaranch to Delaram in Afghanistan.
This is the second incident involving Indian workers in Afghanistan in a fortnight and the third since January this year. Earlier this month, a suicide bomber blew himself up next to an Indian road crew killing two Indian workers and their Afghan driver.
On January 3, a suicide bomber ambushed a Border Roads Organisation convoy, killing two Indians — Manoj Kumar Singh and Desha Singh of the Indo-Tibetan Border Force. Five persons were injured in the attack.
