Panaji, April 18

The issue of the suicide of the girls almost a month ago and which went largely unreported was today taken up by the opposition BJP and it has decided to seek the National Commission for Women's intervention.

"I have handed over the (MMS) CD to director-general of police B S Brar and chief secretary J P Singh," leader of the Opposition in the assembly Manohar Parrikar told reporters here. He said the party women's wing will be approach the NCW to take up the case.

The girls hailing from the temple town of Ponda which is the constituency of home minister Ravi Naik reportedly committed suicide on March 26 after being blackmailed for "sexual favours" by some travel agency personnel.

The coastal state considered a tourist haven has recently been in the news for the death of British teenager Scarlett Eden Keeling who was drugged and raped and her body found on Anjuna beach. An international call girl ring allegedly being run by a Uzbekistan woman was also busted in the state last week. — PTI
