Pay panel report to be reviewed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 11
The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for setting up the Empowered Committee of Secretaries for processing the report of the Sixth Central Pay Commission.

The Cabinet’s decision to constitute an official committee to review the report of the commission stems from disappointment over the report by the armed forces, Indian Police Service officers, scientists, government employees and employees associations.

The empowered committee will mainly function as a screening committee for recommendations. The final recommendations of the empowered committee will be submitted for the Cabinet’s approval.

Minister for science and technology Kapil Sibal told media persons here that the committee would be headed by Cabinet secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar.

The government has already set up a committee headed by finance secretary D. Subbarao to look into the grievances of armed forces and IPS officers.

Meanwhile, railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has demanded that a representative of the Railways, either the finance secretary or member secretary, be made part of the committee.

Lalu told media persons here that he had requested Prime Minister to have a re-look at the recommendations made vis-a-vis the Railways. Lalu said he apprised the Prime Minister of the unrest among rail employees, threatening to go on a strike. Lalu said, “The report does not treat everyone on a par. The recommendations will lead to increase in disparities among different sections.”
