Defence men line up to quit
New Delhi, April 8
In what seems like the after-effects of the Sixth Pay Commission, the ministry of defence has been hit hard with the sudden exodus of officers. Sources said the matter of officers seeking pre-mature retirement after the commission announced its recommendations was a matter of concern. An official spokesperson refused to comment in this regard.

A senior Olympic official today raised the prospect for the first time of abandoning the international legs of the Beijing Games torch relay, amid a wave of protests targeting the flame overseas.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today came out with a package of schemes, projects and proposals at the first ever India-Africa Forum Summit to woo the people and leaders of the mineral-rich African continent for building up a long-term mutually beneficial structure and relationship.

Cong sets up panel for ‘Deshmukh successor’
Mumbai, April 8
Detractors of Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh have begun yet another effort to unseat him and bring about a change in leadership in the state. Congress sources said today that the party leadership has set up a panel to screen potential successors to Deshmukh. Those said to be part of the panel include defence minister A.K. Antony and Pranab Mukerjee.

Less than four months after a complaint was forwarded to the Chandigarh police for probing “various acts of omission and commission” allegedly committed by under-suspension director of Chandigarh Judicial Academy N.S. Saini, it today registered a cheating and criminal breech of trust case.

In a judgment that expands the ambit of the Domestic Violence Act, the Delhi High Court has held that the law protects not only a man’s wife but also a ‘mistress’ or a live-in partner.

J-K polls: Cong non-committal on alliance with PDP

Ahead of the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress is on its guard on the issue of political alliance. Ruling out the possibility of early polls in the state, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Congress unit and union minister of water resources Saifiddin Soz today said the ruling Congress-PDP coalition would run its full course.
