Capt’s murder: Husband held
Tribune News Service

Jammu, April 2
The police today claimed to have solved the suicide case of a female Army officer, Captain Megha Razdan, by arresting her husband, who too was serving as an Army officer, Captain Chaitanya Bhatwadekar, in the same unit.

“We have arrested Captain Chaitanya Bhatwadekar, husband of Captain Megha Razdan under section 306 and 389 A of the Ranbir Penal Court for abetting her to commit suicide,” said Jammu SSP Parminder Singh.

On July 1 last year Captain Megha Razdan of the Engineers Regiment was found hanging at her official residence at Kunjawani near Jammu.

The police claimed it to be a case of an “extra-marital affairs” in which Capt Bhatwadekar had an affair with another girl from Pune in Maharashtra.

“We have confirmed evidences that he had extra-marital affairs with another girl from Pune, from his mobile phone records we came to know that he used to talk to her several times a day, sometimes even more than 100 times a day,” the SSP said.

He further said, “We have collected the records of the SMSs that he used to send to that girl. Captain Megha Razdan, who was a batch mate of Captain Bhatwadekar and had later married him, could not compromise to that fact that her husband had relations outside his marriage.”

The police, however, did not rule out the possibility of murder of Captain Magha Razdan.

“The crime scene was disturbed by her husband; we even found that the height of the ceiling was so that she herself could not have reached it to tie the knot there, so it is possible that he might have tied that knot,” the SSP said.

He, however, said the police was yet to confirm his presence at the scene of the incident. “If it gets established that Captain Bhatwadekar was present in the room then we would charge him for murder also and book him under section 302 of the RPC,” the SSP said.

The arrest has come following the Narco analysis that was conducted on Captain Bhatwadekar in Bangalore.

“On the basic of Narco analysis conducted on Captain Bhatwadekar we have arrested him, the test, however, proved that he had extra-marital affairs and that he instigated his wife Captain Megha Razdan to commit suicide,” the SSP said.

The police also said the computer-printed alleged suicide note that was recovered near the body of deceased captain was fake and was made to “mislead” the investigations

The note had initially sparked a controversy as it was written that she was committing suicide as she was harassed by her seniors in the Army.

The police said Captain Bhatwadekar had stage managed a drama by hiring some unidentified assailants, who allegedly had attacked him and tried to amputate his tongue to bar him from giving his statement.
