New Delhi, March 30
In yet another accident in the capital involving a BMW car, and a high profile person behind the wheel, Gurmeet Singh (28), grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Darbara Singh, hit four labourers causing serious injuries to them in the wee hours on Sunday.
The accident took place around 4 am on the ring road near Safdarjang Hospital in South West Delhi when the car driven by Gurmeet, who was in an inebriated condition, rammed into a stationary truck.
At the time of accident the labourers were
changing the truck’s tyre which had gone flat. The injured were taken to Safdarjung hospital, with
one of the injured, Suresh — in critical condition. However, all the four were later discharged from the hospital.
A case of negligent driving has been filed against Gurmeet in Sarojni Nagar police station and he was taken into custody.
However, later he was granted bail. Gurmeet’s lawyer Prashant Mehendiratta told mediapersons that he was not to be blamed for the accident as the truck driver was at fault. “The truck driver had parked the truck in the middle of the road to change tyres, it is his fault,” Mehendiratta said.
He also added that monetary relief would be granted to the victims. Gurmeet was allegedly in an inebriated condition while driving his steel grey BMW with a VIP number (PJE1).
Gurmeet resides in Noida and runs a transport
business. At the time of accident his parents were in Kolkata. Gurmeet was returning from the Indira Gandhi International airport after dropping a friend and was on his way home to Noida when the accident took place.
Gurmeet’s grandfather Darbara Singh was the CM of Punjab from June 6, 1980 to October 10, 1983.
