Mumbai, March 26
Former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Jagmohan Dalmiya was today formally arrested on charges of misappropriating more than Rs 2.90 crore of the BCCI's funds but was immediately released on bail of Rs 25,000.
Dalmiya was taken into custody at the offices of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai police where he appeared today. He was immediately granted bail under a high court order which granted him anticipatory bail more than two years ago, his lawyer Satish Maneshinde told reporters today.
Apart from Dalmiya, his secretary KM Chaudhury was also arrested and subsequently released on bail. After his release on bail Dalmiya appeared before the Esplanade Court where the EOW filed a chargesheet against him.
As per the charge sheet filed against Dalmiya by the Mumbai police he was accused of cheating under Section 420 of Indian Penal Code, criminal breach of trust under section 408 of IPC and conspiracy under Section 120B of IPC. According to the Mumbai police investigators had found that Dalmiya during his tenure as BCCI chief had embezzled more than Rs 2.90 crores towards payment of personal phone bills, purchasing foreign exchange, car rental, hotel bills and stationary.
