Ludhiana, February 16
Seven undertrials, all belonging to the Bangala tribe and involved in dozens of cases of robbery and murders, made a daring escape from the Central Jail late tonight. The undertrials escaped when the Kapurthala police was handing them over to the jail authorities.
Meanwhile, earlier in the evening one person had escaped from near Kapurthala. Thus eight out of a total of 12
undertrials, who had been taken to Kapurthala for hearing in a case, managed to escape.
Police officials said the fugitives had been identified as Birju, Saana, Bijnuu, Sayasi, Sethani Nath, Makhni, Bhagnu and Balkar.
This is one of the biggest escapes by a group of undertrials in the Central Jail in Ludhiana. Jail Deputy Superintendent S.P Khanna said the undertrials had escaped from the custody of the Kapurthala police. The Division No 7 police has registered a case of negligence against the policemen concerned.
A state wide alert has been sounded. Jail officials said the accused were facing charges in scores of cases and were hardened criminals.
