Radical it may sound, but
it is equally ironical. Desperate to arrest the declining sex
ratio (927 per 1,000 males at present), the Central government
has decided to offer cash to families as an incentive to bear
and retain the girl child. Cash flow will, however, be subject
to certain conditions. The government in collaboration with
the LIC is also working out an insurance cover for the girl
child to encourage her survival and welfare.
Fresh
probe into Virk case

holding that the corruption case against Punjab’s
former DGP S.S. Virk required fresh probe due to
“unsatisfactory nature of investigations” earlier
carried out, Mr Justice H.S. Bhalla of the Punjab and
Haryana High Court today directed the disbanding of the
special investigating team constituted for the purpose
within seven days. |

Method of Virk’s arrest ‘gross violation of rules’

The method of arresting
former director-general of police S.S. Virk, “in gross
violation of the rules”, was taken into consideration, by
the Punjab and Haryana High Court while ordering fresh probe
in a corruption case against him.

Bihar on alert; culling picks up

Culling of chickens in
bird flu-hit areas of West Bengal intensified today as an
alert was sounded in neighbouring Bihar and Assam. Amid the
alarm bells, the Centre asked the West Bengal government to
take immediate corrective steps to stop the spread of the
disease.
