Benazir Bhutto assassinated
Rawalpindi, December 27
Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was killed in a gun and bomb attack after a rally in the city of Rawalpindi on Thursday, her party said. "She has been martyred," said party official Rehman Malik. Bhutto, 54, died in hospital in Rawalpindi. Ary-One Television said she had been shot in the head.

Fresh violence in Orissa
Police station torched, houses attacked
Phulbani, December 26
Despite heavy deployment of security personnel, fresh violence and arson today broke out in riot-hit Kandhamal district as a police station was torched and 10 houses were attacked that left 11 persons injured.

200-cr development package for Anandpur Sahib, Talwandi Sabo
New Delhi, December 26
The Centre has decided to give a package of nearly Rs 200 crore for the development and improvement of facilities at the historic towns of Sri Anandpur Sahib and Talwandi Sabo. An official spokesman said the package will be a part of the year-long project to commemorate the 300th Guruta Gaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Panchayat elections in Punjab will be held soon. However, this time the sarpanches will not be elected direct but through elected panches. Rural development and panchayat minister Ranjit Singh Brahmpura stated this today.
