SC cautions courts against ‘overactivism’
New Delhi, December 10
Judiciary has been under attack from the executive and the legislature for “encroaching” upon their sphere and Parliament in the just concluded session debated the issue in detail, the Supreme Court in a path-breaking introspective verdict today disapproved of over activism by the apex court itself and high courts, saying they “cannot arrogate” to themselves the functions of the other two organs of the government.

Left against deal, not govt
New Delhi, December 10
With remarks of party leader Prakash Karat about the need for the government to conclude talks at IAEA by December being seen as a warning to the government, CPI(M) leaders have emphasised that their aim was to stop the deal and not to de-stabilise the government.

Gujarat goes to polls today
Surat, December 10
Elections to the Gujarat Assembly will begin tomorrow and polling will be held in 87 of the 182 seats. The polling to the remaining seats will be held on Sunday next. Security is tight across Gujarat with several contingents of para-military forces in place till the new government takes over around Christmas Day.

MLAs of the ruling JD(U) and the BJP, besides the CPI(ML), in the Bihar Assembly today demanded the resignation of union minister and senior RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh. The demand came after a report yesterday on how 10-year-old children replaced bullocks to plough land belonging to the minister’s family at Sahpur village of Vaishali district.

Ropar student shot dead in US
Ropar, December 10
Preet Rupinder Singh Sodhi (24), a student from Ropar studying in Santiago city, California state, US, was shot dead by robbers at a store last night. He worked on weekends at the store. The parents of the student received the news about his death this evening. Preet was a student of M-Tech (Electronics).

Parliament Bhagat will wear turban
New Delhi, December 10
The Parliament Secretariat has decided to depict Shaheed Bhagat Singh as a Sikh, with turban, in the statue to be installed on the Parliament premises. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on installation of portraits/statues of national leaders in Parliament complex three days ago, senior Congress MP and member of the committee Karan Singh told The Tribune here today.
