In a setback to the BJP ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in Gujarat, the Election Commission, taking cognisance of media reports and the complaint made by social activist Teesta Setalvad, issued notice to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on his speech on Sohrabuddin and asked him to respond by December 8.

A bill passed by Parliament on Thursday will ensure that elderly people are taken care of by their children failing which they would face penal action.

One deputy superintendent of police (DSP), a sub-Inspector, a retired assistant sub-inspector and three constables have been found guilty in a case of custodial death of Balbir Singh, by the court of additional sessions judge Kuldip Singh. Sentence will however, be announced by the judge on Friday after hearing the defence counsel.

Former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha today sought to raise in the Rajya Sabha the breach of privilege notice he has given against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for speaking “an untruth” about his visit to Japan.
