The taking over of the post of the army chief of Pakistan by Lt Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani, an ex-spymaster and a Punjabi officer from the famed Baloch Regiment, clearly reflects the important role that the USA is playing in the solving matters in Islamabad.

17 die in Colombo blasts
In a day of heightened violence in Colombo, two bomb blasts left at least 17 persons dead and more than 39 injured on Wednesday. In the main blast, which took place in a crowded Colombo suburb of Nugegoda, at least 16 civilians were killed and 37 others injured.

Punjab to seal drug supply routes
Chandigarh, November 28
Two days after The Tribune exposed how well-connected people in Punjab were fuelling drug trafficking by being either directly involved or by harbouring smugglers, the state government today announced a special drive to check drug trafficking by sealing “suspected drug supply routes” on all borders and talking strict action against all persons who are carriers and suspects in the trade.

Govt ensures protection to Taslima
New Delhi, November 28
The government today made it clear that it will give protection to the controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen, but drew a line for her by reminding her that her conduct had to be apolitical.
