After a long drawn intense legal battle of 10 years in one of the country’s worst fire tragedies claiming the lives of 59 cine goers, a city court today found all the 12 accused guilty in the Uphaar cinema disaster case.

AICC allows state unit to fight against CPM

The AICC has finally given a go ahead to the West Bengal party unit to fight against the CPM in the state jointly with the Trinamool Congress and other like-minded parties. Accordingly, the Congress workers and supporters in the state will now participate in the on-going stir on Nandigram, which the Trinamool and the Bhoomi Raksha Committee had started.

Administration talks tough, Army in a bind

The Army has tied itself into knots over the killing of an innocent baker on November 17 in Kulgam district of south Kashmir. After Kulgam deputy commissioner Lateef-u-Zaman Deva pointed a finger at the recklessness behind Riyaz Ahmed Sofi's (30) death, saying soldiers used him as “human shield”, the Army clarified Sofi was accompanying soldiers for the identification of a house when hiding militants opened fire and he died in the crossfire.

High Court rips into working of Punjab Police
‘Multiple probes help accused’
Chandigarh, November 20
The Punjab Police is in the dock literally for adopting the custom of multiple inquiries, and in the process absolving accused even in heinous crimes. Taking a serious view of the practice, Justice L. N. Mittal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed that the ‘unfortunate and sorry state of affairs’ be brought to the notice of the state’s principal secretary, home affairs and Justice, for taking remedial measures.
