Crucial meet today
New Delhi, November 15
On the eve of the crucial UPA-Left meeting on the Indo-US nuclear deal, the government today indicated it would approach the IAEA for negotiations on safeguards agreement. The indication by a senior minister came after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Ex-CM Mahanta indicted for ‘secret killings’
Guwahati, November 15
The much-awaited report of Justice K.N. Saikia Commission into the alleged ‘secret killings’ (systematic elimination of close relatives of ULFA members in a sort of revenge killing), that took place during the later half of the erstwhile AGP-led government (1998-2001), has indicted former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and recommended ‘gradual dismantling’ of the counter-insurgency unified command structure involving the Army, police and paramilitary forces.

Under political pressure, especially from its key ally DMK, the Congress-led UPA government today announced an additional incentive bonus of Rs 50 per quintal for paddy/rice for the Kharif Marketing Season 
(KMS) 2007-08.

ASI makes foreigners pay in Rupee
New Delhi, November 15
In view of the appreciating value of the Rupee vis-a-vis the US Dollar, the government today decided that foreigners visiting the ticketed monuments of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) would now pay only in Indian currency.

Centre clears Rs 150 cr for Chandigarh airport
New Delhi, November 15
The civil aviation minister, Praful Patel, is believed to have sanctioned Rs 150 crore for the expansion of the Chandigarh airport, which provides easy connectivity to not only Punjab and Haryana but also to Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On its part, Punjab reportedly wants to have a second international airport near Mohali.

In a significant decision for Punjab, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has formally approved the proposed Mohali international airport. The decision was conveyed to the Punjab government today, a spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s office said.

Bad day for Reliance
Punjab govt refuses land
Mohali, November 15
Punjab will not give government land to the Reliance Retail for projects in the state. This was decided at a high-powered meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today. The decision will be a setback to the Mukesh Ambani-led multicrore company with which the Congress government had inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in August last year.

Fascinated by kabaddi - the queen of rural sports in India, particularly Punjab - the British Army is trying its hand at the game. Its team will participate in an open international tournament in Jalandhar on November 17 and 18. Though the visitors have already faced the Indian Army team in a couple of exhibition games in Delhi and Mumbai, they are looking forward to the games in the home of kabaddi, the Doaba region.
