PM takes stock of Pak situation

India today gave Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf a cause to smile as it did not condemn the imposition of emergency in Pakistan. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh discussed the Pakistan situation with his number two and external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee this evening, after which the ministry of external affairs promptly issued a two-line reaction.

30 illegal Punjabis caught in France

Thirty illegal Indian immigrants travelling in "inhuman conditions" were stopped while crossing the French Alps in a small truck,the police said. "They were packed together, standing up, in inhuman conditions in an area of less than six square metres. It was horrible," Michel Drezen, head of the border police in France's Haute-Savoie region, said yesterday.

Kidnapped workers return from Nigeria
Chennai, November 3
Three Indian workers who were working at an oil rig in Nigeria and were kidnapped by armed terrorists to extort money returned to their homes in southern Tamil Nadu with a nightmarish experience. The three workers, hailing from a village in Tirunelveli district, 600 km from here, were among the six who were kidnapped by the armed terrorists from their ship off the Nigerian coast last week.

Four persons - a poll candidate of the Congress, two police men and civilian - were shot dead by unidentified militants at Ratzol near Haflong town of North Cachar hill district of Assam at around 1.30 pm today.

Lalu’s security withdrawn
Patna, November 3
The Nitish government today decided to withdraw the special security provided by it to the union railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav as former chief minister. Describing it as a purely administrative move, sources in the special branch claimed that the decision was guided by the widely condemned assault on three journalists by some official bodyguards of the ruling JD(U) MLA Anant Singh.

3,000 Bhutan refugees accept US resettlement

About 3,000 Bhutanese, languishing in refugee camps in Nepal for nearly two decades, have become the first to accept the US government's offer to resettle in American cities and villages, defying pressure by a group that is seeking to return to Bhutan.

Cabinet secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar issued an advisory to all union ministers advising them to keep away from a function in the capital today to felicitate the Dalai Lama - a move aimed at sending a positive signal to China at a time when governments in the US and Germany rolled out a red carpet for the Tibetan religious leader a few days ago.
