Notwithstanding the bitter standoff between the Congress-led UPA government and the Left parties on the Indo-US Nuclear deal, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat has said they recognised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s strong convictions about the soundness and utility of the agreement but there would be no going back on the Left’s stance.

Virk gets bail

Granting bail to Punjab’s former director-general of police S.S Virk in a corruption case, Justice H.S. Bhalla of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today ruled that detaining him behind bars would put him on “slow fire” as the trial was likely to take time.

8,000 teachers face a dark Diwali

Octogenarian Congress stalwart Sat Mahajan, who dominated the political scene in the state for more than five decades, has called it a day citing age and family problems. The Congress veteran and revenue minister served five terms in the Assembly, remained a minister for 18 years.

DA slab released
Shimla, October 31
The state government today released a DA instalment to its employees which became due from July. The employees will be paid dearness allowance at the rate of 41 per cent, up 6 per cent, with the salaries of November. The arrears of additional 6 per cent dearness allowance from July to October will be paid in cash in November. — TNS

A boy from India goes to Pakistan, falls in love with a Pakistani girl, marries her, comes back leaving his wife in that country. A year later, the wife of the Indian delivers a baby boy. A year later she applies for visa, gets it and arrives with her father and child to meet her husband. After meeting him, she refuses to go back to Pakistan.
