At least 14 people were injured as angry workers of Pakistan People's Party clashed with the police, blocked roads and forced closure of shops to protest against the attack on the convoy of their leader Benazir Bhutto that left at least 140 people dead.

7 killed in Baluch van blast
Islamabad, October 20
At least seven persons, including two women and a child, were killed and five others injured today when a bomb planted in a passenger van went off near a hotel in a town in Pakistan’s troubled Baluchistan province.

8.5 pc interest rate for EPF
New Delhi, October 20
The centre today notified the rate of interest for Employees Provident Fund (EPF) for the year 2006-07 at 8.5 per cent. The government’s notification is based on the recommendation of the Central Board of Trustees of EPF. Over four crore subscribers of EPF would benefit from the notification.

Minor reprieve for Dutt
Mumbai, October 20
Actor Sanjay Dutt will enjoy a couple of days more outside jail as the TADA court today did not hand him a copy of the judgement of his conviction in the arms possession case. Dutt, who was instructed by the Supreme Court to surrender before the court on the same day he got the copy, is likely to be given one on October 22.

Rizwanur Case
Arrest warrant against Todi
Kolkata, October 20
The CBI obtained orders of arrest warrant against Ashoke Todi, the prime accused and two other policemen in Rizwanur’s mysterious death case. The policemen are not arrested yet but Ashoke Todi’s passport was seized. Todi and other accused had been asked not to leave Kolkata.

PGI Study
Greater exposure to HIV virus builds stronger defence
Chandigarh, October 20
In the first report of its kind from India, investigators from the PGI have studied the mechanisms that protect certain individuals from HIV infection despite repeated exposure to the HIV virus. Such study was earlier reported from Kenya. Published in four international journals over the past year, the PGI study makes an important contribution to the ongoing global research on the development of HIV vaccine, which depends heavily on the understanding of factors that prevent HIV in some people.
