UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi first backtracked on her public attack against the opponents of the Indo-US nuclear deal. She then followed it up with a meeting tonight with CPM leaders Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury suggesting that they drop their objections to UPA government’s discussions with the International Atomic Energy Agency to negotiate India-specific safeguards.

Notice to Gujarat on ‘fake’ encounters

The Supreme Court today took cognisance of a PIL by noted journalist B.G. Verghese for inquiry into at least 21 encounters in Gujarat in post-Godhra riots, claiming that all of them were “fake” and needed to be investigated thoroughly.

The Supreme Court today issued notices to the Delimitation Commission and the centre on a PIL challenging the panel’s notification reserving four Assembly seats in Haryana for Scheduled Castes with their lesser population and leaving open some others with higher concentration of their number.
