Rescue ops prove futile
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, October 4
The 30-hour-long rescue operations to save contractor Jaswinder Singh, who had been trapped in a 30-foot-deep well on Wednesday, proved futile. The district administration and villagers at around 8.30 this evening succeeded in pulling out the body of the 42-year-old victim. The accident took place yesterday when Jaswinder Singh was deepening the well. Yesterday, the district administration had started the rescue operation with the help of the Army. The operation involved three digging machines and also got assistance from the villagers.

But the operation had to be suspended at about 11 p.m. yesterday taking in view the risk of collapse of the existing structure of the bore-well. The operation was resumed on Thursday morning by the district administration with the help of villagers.

Today the existing structure of the bore-well was demolished and the earth was cleared with the help of digging machines. Then at about 3 p.m. manual digging was started. Scores of youth made a human chain to dig out and clear the earth and sand etc. from the bore-well, where the body of Jaswinder Singh lay.

The villagers with the help of spades, baskets and buckets dug out earth from about 10-foot-deep bore-well to find the body of Jaswinder Singh buried under it. After finding the body, a young man tied with a rope was sent inside the bore-well. He was having another rope in his hand. He tied the rope to the body of Jaswinder, which was then pulled out by the villagers together.

Deputy commissioner Gurpal Singh Bhatti and SP (HQ) Jagtar Singh Kainth, along with officials of the different departments, were present at the site to supervise the operation.

‘Govt, BSP not doing anything for Dalits’
Our Correspondent

Phillaur, October 4
The Bahujan Samaj Morcha (BSM) has accused the Punjab government of not initiating any step for the welfare and uplift of Dalits in the state. Party national president Satnam Singh Kainth said the state government had made tall claims but nothing has happened on the ground.

Talking to newsmen after holding a series of party meetings in different parts of the state, Kainth said despite false claims of strong alliance between the SAD and the BJP, cracks could be seen in both parties over several issues like power tariff hike, subsidies, water disputes, etc.

Even the Bahujan Samaj Party didn’t escape an attack from the morcha. “Dalits are not only fed up with the corrupt, selfish and directionless policies of the Shiromani Akali Dal but also with the Bahujan Samaj Party which never bothered for their interests.”

By adopting vindictive policies as can seen in the DGP Virk case, the leader said the SAD-BJP government was creating a rift among bureaucrats which could prove demoralising for the civil and police administration.

Taking the interests of Dalits, small farmers, traders and employees in mind, the morcha would organise a state-level mass campaign, said the president. Kainth made an appeal to all the Dalits to come and unite under the banner of the BSM.

Guru Nanak Nagar residents apprise admn of problems

Nawanshahr, October 4
A deputation of residents of Guru Nanak Nagar, led by Gurbaksh Singh, met ADC Pritam Singh Johal to apprise him of the problems faced by them due to lack of sanitation, encroachments and illegal constructions in their area.

A memorandum in this regard was submitted to the executive officer, Municipal Council, about two months ago, but to no avail, rued the residents. They also apprised the ADC of the inconvenience being faced by them due to installation of tower of a mobile company.

Residents said they faced inconvenience because of the absence of parking and call bell facilities on the tower premises. Vehicles carrying equipment for the tower block streets. In addition, whenever an official of the company visited the tower at night, he blew the horn constantly to wake up the chowkidar in the absence of a call bell at the gate, the residents added. They urged the administration to take steps to solve their problems.

Residents also complained about the problem due to a meat shop situated near Shivalik Public School in front of the colony.

“The meat shop poses danger to the children as a number of stray dogs gather near it,” the residents say. They urged the administration to shift the shop.— OC
