In an apparent softening of stand, the CPM today decided to explore avenues to resolve the differences with the UPA government on the Indo-US nuclear deal, but stopped short of saying it would withdraw support if the government goes ahead with operationalising the pact.

Rattled Karuna ends fast after SC rebuke

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi hurriedly cut short a fast called to demand early completion of the Sethusamudram canal today and rushed to the office after the Supreme Court threatened to have his government dismissed for letting Tamil Nadu get crippled with an unannounced general strike.

2 top cops, DC suspended on Pak SC orders
Three top officials of the Islamabad police and administration were on Monday suspended under orders from the Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry for supervising brutality against lawyers and journalists on Saturday. In an unusual move on a public holiday, the CJ on Sunday took suo motu notice of the excessive use of force by the police and security agencies to thwart a protest rally by lawyers on the occasion of scrutiny of nomination papers of President Gen Musharraf.

The Union Cabinet today approved the raising of salary or wage eligibility limit for the payment of bonus to Rs 10,000 for the organised sector labour force ahead of the beginning of the festival season and also with an eye on the possible snap general poll.

Rohtak PGI prof attacked, son killed
Rohtak, October 1
A teenaged son of a woman professor of the local PGIMS was found murdered this afternoon. The professor and her elder son were found injured and have been hospitalised. According to police sources and eyewitnesses, some “tantrik” seems to be involved in the gory incident.

SC grants bail to Pereira
New Delhi, October 1
The 21-year-old son of a Mumbai-based businessman, Alister Pereira, sentenced to three years imprisonment for mowing down seven persons sleeping on a pavement in Mumbai in an “inebriated” state last year, was today granted bail by the Supreme Court. A Bench of Justices A.K. Mathur and Markandey Katju, while granting bail admitted the special leave petition filed by Pereira against his conviction by the Bombay High Court.
