Amid government efforts to go to the bottom of the controversy over filing of an “erroneous” affidavit on the Sethusamudram project by the ASI, which was withdrawn yesterday, culture minister Ambika Soni said she "would resign in a minute" if such an indication came from the Prime Minister and Congress President.

Bhutto wants to bring bullet-proof vehicle
Karachi, September 15
Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has moved the Sindh High Court for permission to import a bullet-proof vehicle for travelling in Pakistan on her planned return next month. A petition on the behalf of Pakistan People’s Party leader was submitted to the Chief Justice by her attorney Senator Farooq H. Naek and counsel Adnan Karim on Thursday saying a threat to her and her family members’ security and safety could not be ruled out.

Unhappy over the allocation of funds by the Vaidyanathan committee for the revitalisation of short-term cooperative credit structure in the state, the Punjab government has refused to approve the committee’s report.

Chahal examined in Haryana hospitals, discharged
Ludhiana/Panchkula, September 15
B.I.S. Chahal, former media adviser to former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, apparently fearing arrest in another case especially after the arrest of former Punjab DGP S. S. Virk, got himself admitted to a hospital in Karnal earlier. Under treatment in the General Hospital, Panchkula, Chahal was discharged from the hospital this evening.

Left to set time frame for N-deal review
Hyderabad, September 15
The Left parties would set a “time frame” for the government to complete evaluation of their concerns over the Indo-US nuclear deal and implications of the Hyde Act, Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary Prakash Karat said in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Sukhi gives Vigilance the slip
Jalandhar, September 15
Giving Vigilance Bureau (VB) the slip, a former militant- turned-police “cat” Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi managed to flee Punjab. Talking to The Tribune over phone from a neighbouring state, Sukhi denied all charges levelled against him.

Docs called for interview that wasn’t

A large number of doctors belonging to the general category who had gone to Chandigarh for interviews for the post of senior resident at Government Medical College and Hospital were turned back yesterday by the authorities saying under a new ruling posts reserved for OBCs would not be reverted to the general category in case suitable candidates from the reserved category were not available.

Tendulkar to tell in two days if he is ready for captaincy

The cricket board has sounded out Sachin Tendulkar to take over the captaincy of the Indian team from Rahul Dravid who resigned from the post to concentrate on his batting. Feelers have already been sent out to Tendulkar who has sought some time to make up his mind on whether to accept the job for a third stint, a top cricket board source said.
